BIG Buddha, small Buddha, lot’s of Buddha

BIG Buddha, small Buddha, lot’s of Buddha

When we were in Bangkok, Thailand, we went to The Temple of the Royal Family. It is also known as Wat Pho (WAT- Fo). It was an AWESOME and impressive temple. Here is a little history about Wat Pho:

Wat Pho was around even before King Rama I made Bangkok the capital city of Thailand. The temple has over 1,000 Buddha statues!! The biggest Buddha which is called the Reclining Buddha is 46 meters long and 15 meters tall!!! The Reclining Buddha was built in 1832 along with the temple around it. It represents the end of reincarnation. The right arm of the Buddha image is holding his head which is resting on a box pillow that is greatly decorated with beautiful mosaics. Mosaics is a picture made of glass tiles that can and normally are very colorful. My brother and I did a slide show about religions (as part of our homeschooling), click Here to view. The slideshow will explain who Buddha is.

We really liked the beautifully decorated temples, buildings, gardens and roofs. The different colored roof tiles represent the different kings that ruled and added on to Bangkok and the temples.

Some interesting Buddha facts:

  • The Buddha’s that are sitting down with there hand almost touching the floor are the Buddha’s that have almost reached enlightenment.

  • The Reclining Buddha is the biggest Buddha statue in all of Thailand!!

  • Buddha was eighty years old when he died. He died in 563-483 B.C.

We had an awesome time at Wat Pho!!

This is a image of one of the many famous poses that the Buddha normally is sculpted by. It normally has either one hand that is up and facing right in front of the Buddha or two hands that are up.
